Guarda

“Fair, Faithful, Forceful, Full, Frigid” The 5 “F’s” that define a city which charms through it’s art and through its imposingness and through the mediaeval ancient look. It was here in 1494 that the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain were rectified, the famous Treaty of Tordesilhas which divided the known world in two parts. There are pages of history which are lived in each street, each building and each monument. What stands out is the beautiful Cathedral, a fine gothic church with manueline and renaissance additions which were built from the XIV to the XVI century, glittering with beauty in it’s gothic look.

As for the hand crafts you have to see the artefacts from baskets to tables and all sorts of furniture. Two alternative are offered to those who wish to visit the outskirts of Guarda; one is to go through the valley of Alto Mondego and the other is to go towards the valley of Zêzere.
