Full description: The house, situated in Longra - slightly south of Tomar, is traditionally built from thick local stone giving good heat insulation – this has just been re painted plus bit of work- mainly re-pointing and rendering.
The house is one property, but can be used as two independent units with interconnecting door. In addition to the central heating (only fitted in lower level) there are wood burning stoves in both.
Both houses have two bedrooms, kitchen and a dining area inside and outside. Each has its own separate entrance – there is parking space for two cars included in the plot. The house has central heating and double glazed windows throughout to make the most of the winter evenings (the shutters are original).
The central heating can be controlled by a timer. There are two large bottles of gas to feed this and the hot water – in the winter one bottle lasts about one month, in the summer it is closer to three months. There are 3 bathrooms, two with toilet and bidet; one is fitted with bath and overhead shower, the other two with shower – all drain into a tank. Some of the other grey waste goes to a soak away in the garden. The septic tank (of considerable size) needs emptying twice a year (current cost approx. 80 euros each time).
The upper level has its own dining area and kitchen which leads on to a patio, ideal for outdoor dining and relaxing. The upper bedrooms are ideal for a couple and additional guest. The pool (7 x 4 x 2.1 at the deep end 1m in the shallow) was added in 2001 and has been a source of great delight. The pump and filters are housed below – these have been maintained and serviced professionally – the sand filter replenished this year.
There is a bathroom for the pool at garden level with spacious shower, wash hand basin and toilet. The area is rural and quiet with a few foreign holiday visitors . Tomar is just a 10 minute drive away and there are a couple of mini markets locally to supply fresh foods (with cafes attached).
The Fonte is where the local ladies still do their laundry, exchange news and where there have been many summer festivals in honour of S. Joao |
