Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain range in Portugal being it's highest point of 1,993 m (6,539 ft). The Serra da Estrela Natural Park offers many skiing opportunities at the ski resort that has 4 ski lifts with 130 meters (426 feet) of vertical descent and 9 pistes, with a total length of 7.7 km (5 mi). The Vodafone Ski Resort is best suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for both expert and intermediates.

The Serra da Estrela is not only known for it's skiing but also known for it's Estrela Mountain Dog (Cão da Serra da Estrela). It is a breed of livestock guardian dog that takes it's name from this region.

Also you might have heard from the Serra da Estrela cheese (Queijo da Serra da Estrela). This is a soft cheese that is made from cardoon thistle, raw sheep's milk and salt. This recipe is more than 2000 years old.
